Not all air suspension setups are the same, and knowing the differences between specific components is vital for accurate inventory sourcing and customer technical support.
Here is a breakdown of the primary components that make up modern pneumatic suspension systems.
Commonly utilized on the front axles of luxury European vehicles (like Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7-Series), an air strut combines a traditional hydraulic shock absorber and an air spring into a single, integrated assembly. The air bag is sleeved over the shock absorber.
Pros: Highly space-efficient, offering superior control over both ride height (via the air spring) and damping force (via the shock absorber) in one unit.
Cons: More expensive to replace. If the shock absorber leaks oil, or the air spring leaks air, the entire strut assembly often needs to be replaced.
Typically found on the rear axles of SUVs, trucks, and commercial vehicles, standalone air springs sit independently from the shock absorber. The shock absorber handles the damping, while the air spring handles the load-bearing and height adjustment.
Pros: Very cost-effective for maintenance. If the rubber bellow wears out after 100,000 miles, the mechanic can replace just the air spring without having to replace a perfectly good shock absorber.
Cons: Requires more physical packaging space under the chassis compared to integrated struts.

Valve Blocks: These manifolds contain electromagnetic solenoids that direct the airflow. A failing valve block can cause the vehicle to sag on one side or prevent it from raising altogether. High-quality O-rings and corrosion-resistant materials are essential here.
